Here is a wonderful Sterling silver Urnæs brooch from the David-Andersen 'Saga' Series. The many woodcarvings of Urnæs church in southern Norway has given name to the style. The motif is a supple animal in a fight with snakes. It symbolises Christianity's battle against Paganism.

New Norwegian traditional solje brooch

Here is a traditional Norwegian solje brooch (Sol means sun), designed to be worn on folk costumes which are still used on festive occasions, especially weddings.  Small brooches, as here, were given to children for good luck. There are no marks to identify either the maker or the material, but most soljes are made of silver and then gold-plated, the dishes sparkling with reflected light

Here is a wonderful and very rare silver enamel brooch by the Swedish silversmith Gustaf Jonsson who was registered from 1951 to 1996.  The Persian palm design was very popular in the 1950s, and the artist has used tiny silver balls and silver fronds to enhance the apple-green and black enamel surface.

This Sterling silver brooch was made by the Glasgow silversmith, Carrick Jewellery Ltd.   Its perennially popular design featuring a rose within a grid pattern, was inspired by the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow architect/designer whose work was admired by the Vienna Secessionists, but not recognised in the UK in his own lifetime.

Anton Michelsen Eigil Jensen Boomerang brooch

Product no.: 0078

Here is a famous brooch, much copied in smaller versions. The cool clear lines of the metal will appeal to all lovers of Modernism. It is called Boomerang for obvious reasons, and is so large that it could almost be used as such! It was created by Eigil Jensen, a silversmith who joined Anton Michelsen in 1943 and stayed for 40 YEARs, rising to the post of Production Manager. Although designed in the 1950s, this brooch may have been produced later, as it was very popular.

Here are two examples of the famous Sterling silver Dogwood Flower pattern jewellery which launched and sustained Stujart Nye's career.  Stuart Nye established 1933 in North Carolina and it is still in existence.  The brooch is seen quite frequently but the bangle is rarer, especially in the U.K.

Here is a very famous silver and enamel brooch by the Danish silversmith Erik Magnussen, who worked in Copenhagen from 1901 to 1920 and again from 1939.  After early recognition and successes with Art nouveau creations he spent many years in America, returning home to concentrate on simpler, Nordic themes.  Here is the most successful, with the swans each adorned with the national colours of one of the five Nordic countries.

Georg Jensen Malinowski Cockerel Brooch, no 276

Arno Malinowski was one of the most versatile and successful designers who ever worked for the Georg Jensen Silver smithy. He designed for Georg Jensen from 1936 to 1944, and again from 1949 to 1965. Most Jensen lovers are familiar with his Art Deco stylised animal broochs such as the kneeling deer, the two dolphins , the butterflies and the chubby birds. This cockerel is hardly ever seen on the re-sale market.
