New Munksgaard silver floral brooch

Product no.: 1823

This exceptional silver floral brooch was made by the Danish silversmithy Fir. Munksgaard, whose workshop was registered in Fåborg until 1973.  The design harks back to the Art Deco period, when motifs were often set within a frame. Here however the frame is softly rounded and the tendrils hae 'escaped' to curl around the frame.

Here is a wonderful brooch by the Danish company Eiler & Marløe, renowned silversmiths active during the first half of the 20th Century, registered 1920 to 1967 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The most outstanding designs were produced during the 1920s and 1930s in the Art Deco style, either functionalist or as here, in flowing organic designs.  This one features a rabbit or hare hiding in foliage.

Here is a wonderful bunch of flowers in a rectangular frame.  This design was much loved in the 1940s and 1950s in Denmark, and produced by a number of different silversmiths, including Grann and Laglye. This exampl has lost its markings -perhaps it was on a c-clasp which was replaced by the safety clasp.

David-Andersen Sterling gilt trefoil Viking Saga brooch

David Andersen's 1960s "Saga" series included of copies of prehistoric finds deposited in the Oslo historical museum.  The original of this brooch was found  on the Kvarberg Hill near Vågå in central Norway..  The trefoil design first seen on Frankish warrior sword belts, but  it was adopted by the Norse  and adapted for use as brooches on women's costumes and with animal decoration. such as the gripping beasts seen here

Anton Michelsen Eigil Jensen Boomerang brooch

Here is a famous brooch, much copied in smaller versions. The cool clear lines of the metal will appeal to all lovers of Modernism. It is called Boomerang for obvious reasons, and is so large that it could almost be used as such! It was created by Eigil Jensen, a silversmith who joined Anton Michelsen in 1943 and stayed for 40 YEARs, rising to the post of Production Manager. Although designed in the 1950s, this brooch may have been produced later, as it was very popular.

The lovely daisy is made of sterling silver, gilt, and with white enamel. The strong white enamel of the petals contrasts with the gold wash in the centre and which frames the petals . The Marguerite daisy is the national flower of Denmark. This example is an early original Anton Michelsen piece,

Georg Jensen Harald Nielsen Sterling silver brooch 266

Product no.: 1596

Here is a large rectangular brooch in a delicate Art Deco design by Harald Nielsen for the Danish silversmithy Georg Jensen. Harald Nielsen was the brother of Jensen’s third wife Johanne, and he joined the firm in 1909, aged 17. He helped to establish the Jensen style and the firm’s tradition for outstanding quality. In the 1920s he designed jewellery, flatware and hollowware, many, as this brooch,  still in production 50 years later. There is a notable stylistic development during the course of this decade, which started with the naturalistic organic forms of the Danish Art Nouveau or Skønvirke, and ended with the stricter more streamlined forms of Art Deco. After Georg Jensen’s death in 1935, Nielsen became the artistic leader of the company.

It is no 411 in the catalogue and is described as found in a Viking grave near Lillevang on the island of Bornholm. It is dated between 800 and 1050 AD.

Kalevala Koru is a Finnish jewellery maker which started its activitties in the 1930s during the growing awareness of Finnish identity and heritage, specialising in replicas of historical finds..  Yhe prototype for this piece was a circular gold-plated silver brooch found at Suotniemi in Käkisalmi. The ornamentation of this unique find, which dates from the 13th century, is the palmette motif used in ancient Greece. This particular brooch probably came to Finland from Sweden
